OCALA, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis held a news conference Wednesday morning at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in Ocala, where he awarded law enforcement recruitment bonus checks.

The Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program became law in April 2022, billed as a way to aid in the recruitment of law enforcement officers within the state via a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.

“You can have great sheriff’s departments or police departments, (but) if you have leadership that’s trying to undercut you or in some cases even stab you in the back like you see in some of these places, then it’s going to be very hard. So it’s really a team effort, we’ve set the leadership and the policy, there’s been great execution at the local level and Florida’s better off, but it’s also set a tone that’s gone beyond the state of Florida,” DeSantis said Wednesday. “(...) I think we’ve really set a standard that other states are now trying to follow and it’s much harder for the states that have gone opposite of Florida to justify why they’re doing what they’re doing when you have such poor results to show for it.”
